Suminagashi Paper Marbling

Tuesday, July 9th, 9 am – 12 pm

Teachers: $10 per adult / $10 per keiki

Non-teachers: $20 per adult / $10 per keiki

Ages 5 and up

*Teachers are invited to attend this event alone or with their children (grades K-12), but children may not attend without a parent. We will allow non-teachers to register with or without their keiki, however, we’ll prioritize spots for teachers and their keiki first.

Join us for a lovely, fun filled day at Mānoa Heritage Center! We’ll first venture through Mānoa Heritage Center’s beautiful gardens to learn about native plants. After, we’ll start our Suminagashi Paper Marbling workshop for adults and their keiki. Suminagashi means “floating ink” in Japanese. Participants will learn a traditional paper marbling by dipping an inked brush in water. Also, a “resist” method will be shown to create organic patterns, inspired by the native plants from the tour. Come and dip with us, and let’s have some marbling fun in vibrant colors while enjoying the surrounding gardens of rare native hawaiian plants. If you attend the Intro to Papermaking workshop the day before, you can use that paper for this workshop.
Delicious pastries will be provided by Brug Bakery to be enjoyed in the garden, but please feel free to bring your own lunch as well! The morning tour will be outside in the sunshine, so please dress and sunscreen accordingly.
Please note that this workshop aims to connect teachers with art, ideas and resources. It does not fulfill any teacher professional development requirements. Spaces are limited with priority given to current Hawaii public and private school teachers. *If you attend the workshop, you are required to fill out Manoa Heritage Center’s online waiver and Parent Release form — please bring this form the day of.*
